SPIRIT SQUAD

"It takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer"

HMS offers cheer and dance, to provide support and spirit not only to our entire student population at Huntington Middle School, but also to our traveling athletic teams who compete in the 210 Middle School Athletic League composed of local middle schools in the surrounding cities.

The team will be composed of 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  This will be an advanced co-ed team that will hold no more than 8-16 spots.  There will be a tryout and cuts will be made based on ability.  All 6th/7th/8th graders are encouraged to come and tryout regardless of experience.

Goals and Expectation:

The coaches’ goal for the upcoming season is to gain athleticism while raising the level of school spirit. In addition, to get our student athletes to prepare themselves for the next level of their athletic career whether it’s the high school level or for the following season. With that in mind, there will be high expectations from the student athlete this year; in the classroom, in the practice field, and during our performances. The coaching staff will expect nothing, but the absolute best in all aspects from our student athletes this upcoming season.  It is expected that the student athletes review material over video and practice outside of official practice days/times.

Commitment:

Our goal is to prepare the players on these teams for high school level teams. Therefore, as coaches we expect 110% commitment from our athletes to our travel program.  The cheer and dance team members are expected to review any recorded material they miss due to absences as part of their commitment in order for us to train as a team. Exceptions may apply such as other school related activities, illnesses, or doctor/dental appointments.  Other exceptions will be determined under the evaluation of the coaches’ discretion.

Commitment to the team plays a big part of what we are trying to accomplish; violations will result in practice/game suspensions, decrease in performance time, or removal from the program under the coach and Athletic Director discretion.

Team members will be given a contract and the coach will hold a team meeting during Summer Clinicals outlining the expectations and commitment needed to participate at a competitive level in middle school sports.

Tryout Criteria:

  • Students must attend cheer + dance clinical to learn a 60-second routine, 2 cheers, and herkies

  • Demonstration of teamwork and communication with fellow players

  • Demonstration of willingness to learn and grow as an athlete in the sport

Tryout Period:

  • TRYOUT CLINICALS will be held in the Spring (Dates TBD). Each day of tryout clinics are MANDATORY in order to tryout. *Absences must be communicated well in advanced and are considered on a case by case basis
